LNBA Beats the Clock
In 1996, the state government ordered the municipalities and industries that comprise the Lower Neuse Basin Association (LNBA) to reduce the amount of nitrogen they discharge into the Neuse River by 30 percent from their 1995 rateand in only seven years.
The LNBA not only met that deadline, it blew it out of the water. By pooling their resources and their expertise, the LNBA members were able to beat the deadline by more than three years.
As of 2000, the amount of nitrogen discharged into the Neuse River estuary by LNBA members had been reduced by 46 percent.
At the end of 2001, LNBA member's total pounds of nitrogen discharged into the Neuse River had been reduced by 53%!
